Alexandros Papangelis is a Research Engineer and Team Leader for Dialogue at the Speech Technology Group of Toshiba Research Europe Cambridge Research Laboratory in UK since Jan 2016, working on statistical spoken dialogue systems. From Jan 2013 until Dec 2015 he was a post-doctoral Fellow at the Articulab in Carnegie Mellon University, working on socially-skilled virtual agents. Prior to that he was at University of Texas at Arlington as a Research Assistant Professor working on Adaptive Dialogue Systems. He holds a PhD from University of Texas at Arlington (USA) and Demokritos Research Center (Greece) in Computer Science Engineering working on Adaptive Dialogue Systems for Assistive Living Environments (2013) and MSc in Machine Learning from University College of London (2009) and he has studied Informatics and Telecommunications at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2008).
He has (co-)authored more than 30 scientific publications in conferences and journals on the topic of Dialogue Systems and Virtual Agents while he has filed 5 UK/USA patents on the same topic. He has served as member of program or organizing committees for various conferences, including SIGDial, SLT, IVA, YRRSDS, and others and as a reviewer in conferences and journals of similar scope (e.g. IJHCS, TiiS, TALIP).
His main research interests are statistical dialogue management, social virtual agents, and reinforcement learning.
