Google tackles the most challenging problems in computer science and related fields. Being bold and taking risks is essential to what we do, and research teams are embedded throughout Google allowing our discoveries to affect billions of users each day. In doing so, we actively
collaborate with, and learn from, the broader scientific community, and publish our research in traditional scientific venues, open source software releases, industry standards, data releases and patents.

Ever since Google was born in Stanford’s Computer Science department, the company has valued and maintained strong relations with universities and research institutes. In order to foster these relationships, we run a variety of programs that provide funding and resources to the academic and external research community, and make publicly available datasets aimed at furthering research across a range of computer science disciplines.

Research Grants
Our goal is to identify and strengthen long-term collaborative relationships with faculty working on problems that will impact how future generations use technology. Google Faculty Research Awards are structured as seed funding to support one graduate student for one year and are awarded as an unrestricted gift.

Visiting Faculty
As part of our Visiting Faculty Program, academics from universities worldwide visit Google in order to collaborate with our research and engineering teams. Both parties benefit as exciting ideas and research challenges are shared, and Google’s world-class computing infrastructure is utilized to explore new projects at industrial scale.

Student Support
In order to foster, support, and deepen our relationship with the next generation of researchers, Google offers fellowships, scholarships, and other student opportunities. We offer fellowships globally in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East, Australia, India and China.

Research Datasets
In order to contribute to the broader research community and to spur progress, Google consistently releases data of interest to researchers in a wide range of computer science disciplines, such as word-sense annotations for natural language understanding, the Open Images dataset, YouTube-8M and more.
